2008 saw the first ever Topps Tiles 'Mega Mosaic Makers' competition, sponsored by Topps Tiles, which was open to Primary Schools throughout the UK, with total prizes of £2,500. The standard was very high and we know that all the mosaics will be a source of pride for years to come. Many thanks are due to Topps Tiles for sponsoring this event.
Judging took place early in December 2008. In reaching their decision, the judges tried to balance several factors; we wanted to recognise those projects which were clearly driven by the original ideas of the children and while also wanting to reward the high quality of execution and finish that so many mosaics displayed, it was important that adult help was evidently given with a light touch.
There were ninety entries, all made by school groups. The winning entries were - first prize no. 34, 2nd prize no. 17 and third prize no 16. Vouchers will be delivered/presentations will take place in January 2009. BAMM will contact winners individually in the New Year.
The competition will run again in 2009 and we encourage all schools to plan now for entry. Mosaics made in the last three years may be submitted but may only be entered into this competition once. Hints on mosaic making in schools can be found in the Education Section of this website.

| First Prize Entry Number 34 £650 St Bernadettes/Weir link - Welcome A vibrant mosaic welcome panel created by St Bernadette's School (London SW12) and the local community, facilitated by Art4Space. The panel is 2 1/2 metres by 1 1/2 metres and is a mixed media mosaic with hand made ceramic tile border. The participants were involved in every stage of the project. The theme is a storyboard depicting the dreams and aspirations for the new community centre - 'The Weir Link' - and the surrounding area. Over 150 pupils were involved which included 5 school workshops starting with a design day. The pupils were creative, dedicated and empowered by the experience. It is an amazing mosaic bringing pride to the new building for all to enjoy. Link to Art4Space website http://www.art4space.co.uk |

Judges will:
• Favour child originated concepts (remember to submit drawings if you have them).
• Give consideration to the size of the group, the amount of time allowed for preparation, (some projects are planned in advance, others are created ‘on the spot’) and time taken to complete.
• Consider ages of the children, the numbers involved, size of the working group and how far adults were involved in the making.
Entries will be shortlisted by Anne Cardwell of Making Mosaics, BAMM member, mosaic course leader and art facilitator in schools. The short listed selection of entries will be judged by a BAMM panel, including the President of BAMM, Gary Drostle, and also Viv Johns of Topps Tiles.
