'The Large Blue' (2013)

As an artist, I am inspired by daily reality; the places I visit and the things I see. This guides my practice and the path that I follow as a creative practitioner. Previously, my work has been naturalistic. I used the challenges of accurate representation to understand the medium of mosaic and explore its capabilities.

I am now moving into the realms of abstraction. Looking beyond the initial subject, I search out and discover individuality in selected elements from the environment around me, both the natural and manmade world. Reducing each subject to its essentials, highlights the unique, emotive qualities that excite my imagination - this may be a series of colours, a simple pattern, structure or texture. Without the distraction of realism, a tiny element of the ordinary, can become something of great significance. I then use this to create a personal response through the medium of mosaic, opening the eyes of the viewer to different perspectives and sharing my perceptions of the world around me.

When making, I maintain an open, experimental approach, allowing the addictive, repetitive process of mosaic to take over and control the direction of my work. It is a time-consuming process but I feel compelled to continue and become totally absorbed in hand cutting every tile to a precise shape, gluing the pieces in position and carefully considering their direction and flow. When creating, I am also captivated by colour, which plays an important role in my work. The ceramic and glass tiles are my paint palette. I take time to consider and select each hue so that they blend harmoniously, connecting the fragments together to create a coherent whole.
